  • A taut, uncluttered thriller about Brooklynite Phil Brant, first seen at the funeral of older brother Vinnie who -- unknown to Phil but revealed to readers in a one-page preface -- pulled a bank vault job on the Coast with two accomplices just before the three of them were shipped out to Vietnam. Phil's grief is soon mixed with uneasiness and then displaced by terror as Vinnie's army buddies appear on the scene and begin to close in on Phil, the kid brother to whom they believe Vinnie had confided the whereabouts of the stolen package. Vinnie's girl is murdered and Vinnie himself turns up alive but is then killed for real in a final attempted getaway before it is disclosed that the disputed box contains only worthless substitutes for the $125,000 worth of stamps the trio thought they were getting. A tired trick ending yes, and it's preceded by a whole hatful of stock devices, but Bennett makes the efficient roost of Phil's feelings for his brother and his growing sense of menace.
